Scheduling Your Child’s First Dental Appointment
It is a good idea to schedule a dental appointment for your child shortly after their first birthday, unless they are demonstrating pain or discomfort, in which case it is important to schedule an appointment as soon as possible so they can be evaluated. During this appointment, our first priority is to make sure they (and you) are calm and comfortable through stress relieving methods like evoking laughter or playing games. Next, we will evaluate your child’s mouth by pressing their gums to look for indications of discomfort or anything unusual and ensure that they are meeting developmental milestones. If there are any areas of concern, it may be necessary to take further diagnostic exams, otherwise you will be given an opportunity to ask any questions or share any concerns, after which your child’s first appointment will be complete.
For older children, dental appointments will become more involved and include a thorough examination of their teeth, tongue, and cheeks. These visits will also include an inspection for cavities and possibly a dental cleaning and/or placement of dental sealants. In addition to evaluating your child’s oral health, these appointments are also an opportunity for us to educate them on best oral health care practices, such as proper brushing and flossing techniques and the importance of eating healthy foods.
Preparing Your Child for their Appointment
At Dental Serenity, we do everything we can to make you and your child’s visit an enjoyable experience, but even so, it is very normal for children to have concern or anxiety leading up to their dental appointment. To help reduce their anxiety, we recommend talking to your child about their appointment in positive terms leading up to and on the day of their appointment, describing the experience as more of an “adventure” than an appointment and avoiding scary words like “drill” or “needle” or other terms that might have a negative connotation. We also recommend that your child bring along their favorite blanket or toy in case they do become upset or overly worried. If you forget to bring either of these things, we have toys and stuffed animals available to keep your child entertained.
How to Create Good Oral Hygiene Habits
While scheduling regular appointments for your child is an important step to ensure that they enjoy good oral health, it is equally important to teach them good oral hygiene habits at home. If you follow these general guidelines, you will give you child a jumpstart on avoiding oral health issues and help make sure that they enjoy a bright, healthy smile for many years to come:
- You can brush your child’s first tooth/teeth using water or a paper towel. Talk to your dentist or physician before incorporating toothpaste
- Try to give your child a glass or bottle of water following milk or formula
- Wean your child from thumb sucking, bottled milk, and breast feeding around one year of age to avoid decay and reduce their risk of having jaw growth problems
- When they are old enough to brush their own teeth, monitor their technique and give them advice on ways they can improve their technique
- Limit or avoid sugary foods and drinks, especially right before they go to bed
These are just a few simple guidelines that can help your child enjoy good oral health. If you have additional questions or would like more tips, let our staff know!
What is the Cost of Treatment?
The cost of treating your child will depend largely on what type of procedure they are having performed and whether you are covered by dental insurance. If you do have dental insurance, your final bill will be determined by your dental insurance coverage, co-pay requirements, and annual deductibles.
Our clinic is in network with most PPOs and accepts all insurance plans. We also offer interest free financing through Lending Club, and CareCredit, or you may consider joining our Dental Serenity Membership Club to save money on treatment and simplify your payments for preventative care.
