Dental Exam & Checkup for Optimal Oral Health

The two most important steps you can take to protect your oral health is to practice good oral hygiene habits every day and to schedule regular dental exams and checkups. Scheduling regular dental exams and checkups ensures that you will receive consistent deep cleanings that will eliminate plaque and calculus that cannot be removed with traditional toothbrushes. Scheduling regular examinations also ensures that your oral health is monitored on a regular basis and issues that have the potential to develop into something worse are identified and treated as early and as effectively as possible.

At Dental Serenity™, we offer a comprehensive range of dental procedures, from common treatments like fillings or root canal therapy, emergency care, restorative procedures like dental implants to replace a missing tooth or teeth, cosmetic treatments like veneers, teeth whitening, and smile design, and preventative treatments like dental exams and checkups. To ensure you are comfortable and have as enjoyable an experience as possible, we also offer sedation dentistry so you can remain calm and receive the care you need.

What to Expect During Your Dental Exam and Checkup

Every patient will have a slightly different experience during their dental exam and checkup, especially patients who have a history of periodontal disease or other oral health issues, but most dental exams and checkups will go as follows:

  • Review and update your medical history and discuss any questions or concerns you have
  • Evaluate your oral health by inspecting your gums, teeth, and cheeks, looking for signs of gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues
  • Evaluate restorations, dentures, and/or bridges for proper fit and signs of wear (if applicable)
  • X-ray or other diagnostic exam to inform treatment and detect bone loss, cysts, tumors, and/or general decay (if necessary)
  • Perform professional cleaning to remove surface stains or deposits
  • Offer fluoride treatment
  • Provide oral health recommendations
  • Schedule follow up appointment

What is the Cost of Dental Exams and Checkups?

The cost of a dental exam and checkup will vary depending on a variety of factors, including whether diagnostic examinations are necessary, what type of dental cleaning is performed and any additional procedures that are necessary, and whether you are covered by dental insurance. If you do have dental insurance, your final bill will be determined by your dental insurance coverage, co-pay requirements, and annual deductibles.

Our clinic is in network with most PPOs and accepts all insurance plans. We also offer interest free financing through Lending Club, and CareCredit, or you may consider joining our Dental Serenity Membership Club to save money on treatment and simplify your payments for preventative care. Deep Teeth Cleaning

Regular dental cleanings should be performed at least every six months. Doing so allows for you to receive a professional cleaning of the surfaces and areas above your gum line and between your teeth. Your regular cleanings will also include an overall examination of your oral health to look for any indications of potential cavities, inflamed gums, or other warning signs of oral health issues. If a problem area is identified, digital x-rays may be taken to gather additional information to determine what the underlying problem may be and determine an appropriate treatment plan. If no problem areas are identified during the initial examination, the cleaning will begin with the removal of plaque and tartar between your teeth and around your gum line. Once these are removed, a gritty toothpaste is applied to a power toothbrush to clean and polish your teeth, leaving them shiny and smooth. Next, your teeth are professionally flossed, after which fluoride treatment may be offered. This is not always necessary, but having fluoride treatment will help protect your teeth against cavities until your next appointment.

Unlike a regular cleaning, a deep cleaning (or scaling and root planing procedure) involves the removal of plaque and tartar that has accumulated below your gum line. Prior to performing this procedure, a local anesthetic may be applied to numb the area. Next, the tartar and plaque are removed, and the dentin and cementum are decreased. Finally, the root of your teeth is smoothed to inhibit future bacterial accumulation. Deep teeth cleaning can be conducted in one or all four quadrants of your mouth. If only one or two quadrants require treatment, this can typically be accomplished in one visit. Patients who require three or all four quadrants to be treated may require two separate appointments.
