When a patient is performing routine tasks which may include brushing or flossing their teeth, they may notice their gums start bleeding. While a small amount of blood may not raise concern, bleeding gums are not normal and may even suggest the presence of an underlying issue requiring treatment. Patients should not ignore these symptoms and should follow up with their dentist for evaluation
There are several different things which can cause the gums to bleed. Common causes may include an accident or injury, aggressive pressure when brushing, pregnancy hormones, some types of medications, and inflamed gums. Gums which are inflamed may be red, swollen, and tender. Irritated gums that bleed easily can suggest the presence of gum disease. In order to determine the optimal treatment, the dentist must first identify the cause of a patient’s bleeding gums. Some of the most common methods used to stop bleeding gums are summarized below.
Good Oral Hygiene Regimen
In some cases of patients with bleeding gums, the issue may be associated with simply not practicing good oral hygiene. In fact, the patient may be completely neglecting their oral health which can allow for plaque to accumulate near the gums. Over time, this can cause inflammation and eventually bleeding. Plaque is a sticky film which contains bacteria. It is removed with regular brushing and flossing. The failure to remove plaque allows for it to coat the teeth and gums, resulting in decay and gum disease.
Good oral hygiene practices include brushing the teeth at least twice each day and daily flossing. It is also important for patients to make regular visits to the dentist where they will receive an examination and a professional cleaning. Routine dental visits also aid in the early detection of issues such as gum disease or decay.
Rinse
A hydrogen peroxide rinse is a disinfectant and can be used in the form of a rinse to remove plaque, promote healthy gums, and stop the gums from bleeding. It may even be helpful to use a hydrogen peroxide rinse after brushing. Be careful not to swallow any hydrogen peroxide as it can cause problems when ingested.
Vitamin C
It is important for patients to consume a well-balanced diet that contains plenty of vitamin C. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system and helps fight off infection, including gum disease. Patients who are vitamin C deficient may notice their gums bleed easily.
Foods which are high in vitamin C include oranges, sweet potatoes, red peppers, and carrots. Patients who want to consider taking a supplement should follow up with their doctor. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant, meaning it can strengthen the connective tissue and protect the lining of the gums. It is recommended that adults consume 65 to 90 milligrams of vitamin C daily.
Stress Reduction
Experts have found that there is an association between high levels of stress and periodontal disease. Stress can negatively impact the immune system and weaken the body’s ability to fight off infection. Patients who are extremely stressed can find that it negatively impacts both their oral and general health. Some patients find it beneficial to find ways to manage, reduce and avoid stress triggers. Patients who work in a high-stress environment find it helpful to work on coping mechanisms.
Smoking Habits
Patients who smoke tobacco are at a higher risk for a plethora of health issues. This includes gum disease, lung cancer, heart disease, strokes, and other serious health problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified smoking as a primary cause for severe gum disease. Smoking has also been found to weaken the immune system, increasing a patient’s risk for gum disease. Patients who smoke should stop as there are many serious side effects and consequences.
